By 1971, the time of their seventh album, my favorite way to sample a new Moody Blues album was to play the songs, sight unseen, and try and guess which artist wrote the song. It's fun to try that game within this one song, as all the members contributed distinct parts. For instance, does anyone doubt that Ray Thomas is responsible for that lovely little major-key flute melody?
Now that Graeme Edge has "retired" from his ambient spoken-word tracks, the entire group now throws in to assemble this off-beat interpretive album opener. It attempts to relate (in four minutes) the evolution of sound through the epochs of time, from mere percussion, a simple scale, tribal grunts and chants, to melodies (minor key, then major) played on flute followed by harpsichord, capping the progression with the electric age: organ, and finally a withering guitar solo which segues seamlessly into the following track. |
