I deliberately shun Lennon vs. McCartney debates because (a) so much discussion about the Beatles is diminished by one's obviously partisan stance and (b) they were both incredibly brilliant, and there simply is NO Beatles without what they BOTH brought to the table. Having said that, it is worth noting that during three specific instances in the Beatle's career when a song needed to be composed under a deadline, it was John delivering not just a song, but an undeniable classic ("A Hard Day's Night", "Help", and "All You Need is Love").
"A Hard Day's Night" is the best-told of these stories, John writing this song (with Paul) in a single night to fit a title that Ringo unwittingly created. Man, what a fine song this is!
Many Beatles songs bear the by-line Lennon/McCartney, seemingly ignoring the creative input of George's guitar contributions (for example, "And I Love Her" is more truly a "McCartney/Harrison" than it is a "Lennon/McCartney"). Never is this more true in "A Hard Day's Night", whose most memorable moments include the ringing opening chord, the middle solo which is virtually a song on its own, and the fadeout (if you haven't heard it, check out this fadeout on "Live at the BBC").

Lyrics
It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I'll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you say you're going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight
Owww!
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright
