Galathée (1852)

“Galathée” by Victor Massé

Premiere / date of written: 1852

Galathée is a two-act French opéra comique by Victor Massé, first performed in Paris in 1852. Inspired by the classical myth of Pygmalion and Galatea, the opera tells the story of a sculptor whose statue magically comes to life. Combining light comedy, graceful melodies, and elegant orchestration, Galathée reflects the refined and charming style of mid-19th-century French opera. Though rarely performed today, it remains an appealing example of French Romantic comic opera.
